Love and Other Memories

vol 1  poem 2.

Building Bridges

by Tony Stewart

How long can I go on pretending

I'm still in love with you

I can't go on building bridges

To keep in touch with you

You do so many things

To push us as far apart

And still insist so strongly

In tying up my heart

You make it so if I want you

There is so much that I have to do

But I can't go on building bridges

To keep in touch with you

The love I once felt for you is gone

It's vanished in the breeze

But you keep those memories bubbling up

Like new flowers on the trees

And though a part of me will sometimes like to be

Back when our love was new

I can't keep building bridges

To keep in touch with you

But your mind is full of conflict

Even to yourself you speak some words untrue

I think your mind is so belligerent

You won't accept that we are through

You can't stand the thought

That you're no longer the one in charge

You did not see the break-up coming

You didn't set the rules

Your love for me never really died

It was never really there before

And I have found some one new

Who loves me even more

How many fights can you initiate

How much hurt and pain must I feel

Before I make you realize it's over

Nothing here is real

And now you put the pressure on

To try to win me back once more

But I know it's not me you want

You hate losing even more

But my new love loves only me

And gives me love that's strong and true

And I've stoped building bridges

To keep in touch with you
